WHAT IS THE NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD ?

The Night of the Living Dead began for several reasons. First, the country needed a professional deadlift only meet as there was not one at its inception. Second, the area had forgotten its rich deadlifting history and needed an event to remind the people of their iron-laden past. Third, I had just started a high school powerlifting team and we had no money. The NOTLD allowed us to raise money for the kids and to bring in some of the greatest deadlifters on earth to inspire them to new heights.

What began as a small meet with 10 lifters has turned into the most exciting deadlift meet in the world attracting the premier deadlifters from America and even a few from overseas.

NEW GUIDELINES FOR THE NOTLD (effective 2012)

As many of you know, the NOTLD exploded in 2010 with the addition of TV. 2011 was even crazier with the addition of UNation and the UPC championship belt for deadlift awarded at the NOTLD. This year things are going through the roof! Again we have signed on to be part of the Xtreme Power TV Ultimate Powerlifting Series that will now be televised in 100 million homes on MAVTV and TUFFTV (up from 40 million on FSN). There will be a weekly show on these networks with XPTV airing the same time every week very soon. We are also being expanded from 1 thirty minute show to 2 thirty minute shows this year. What we do know right now is that the NOTLD will be the only deadlift show aired on national TV.

XPTV will again have a series for the full meet powerlifting belt, but the greatest deadlifter will be crowned exclusively based on performances at the NOTLD. We will be awarding the championship belt that cost thousands to the winner. I will again begin to work the sponsors hard and I will announce at a later date about the prize money. Many of the greatest pullers in the world are planning on coming, including all of the big winners from last year: Hawthorne Urbank, Bolton, Jenny O’Neil, Eiseman, etc.).

1) With all of these new happenings, we will have to change our format a bit. First, we will have an open period for people to tell me of their desire to lift at the meet. Second, rankings will be released that invited the top 25 lifters (20 male and 5 female). Third, a time period where the top 25 ranked lifters must confirm their spot with payment, Then another period where alternates will fill the spots of any top 25 lifter that has decided not to lift. Then the final lineup will be announced. It worked perfectly last year. You can imagine there are other reasons like sponsors, TV, etc that we must know who is coming in advance.

2) Qualifying lifts will be accepted from all sanctions and it does not matter where, but it just needs to have happened. All legitimate competitions are accepted, and we do not play politics to find our lifters. We just take the best and put them on 1 platform.

3) Each entrant will have to pre-register by the given deadlines. This meet will be full, and I do not play favorites. I hope that all lifters understand that this meet is now so huge we have been tasked with finding the greatest pound for pound deadlifter regardless of weight, age, or federation and it causes a logistical nightmare now that TV, major sponsors, media, international lifters, etc. have been added to the mix.

4) Last year we introduced the morning flight and it was a huge success. We are prepared to take even more lifters this year for the morning flight. The price will be $60. We may take as many as 30 lifters (2 flights of 15) if needed. We will again provide an automatic qualifying spot for the night flight the following year to the best male and female lifter.

4) The price will be $75. Every lifter will get a free t-shirt, the winning lifter will be crowned the Ultimate Deadlifter by Xtreme Power TV, and receive a $3,000 championship belt and prize money. The meet will also be nationally televised with tons of media coverage through live web streaming, and magazine coverage, websites, etc.

5) Again our focus will be on finding and crowning the unified deadlift champion by Schwartz formula this year. It may be possible due to increased sponsorship to have prizes (either cash or in kind) to lifters outside of the champion, but that will be decided as sponsorship comes in and announced as soon as possible.

6) The date for the meet is going to be October 13th, 2012 in Elizabethton, TN.

7) An entry form will be distributed at a later date and will be announced through personal emails, mail if requested, Powerlifting USA, and internet powerlifting forums such as Powerlifting Watch, and of course on our website www.nightofthelivingdeadlift.blogspot.com.

Here is the tentative deadline:

Now- July 6th: Email me and inform me of your desire to compete
July 9th: The top 25 spots (20 male and 5 female) will be posted with alternates
July 9th-July 20th: Lifters must confirm their spot by sending entry form and payment
July 23rd: Spots available due to a declination of the top 25 will be announced to the
alternates
Aug 3rd: Alternates must have confirmed their spots with entry form and payment
Aug 6th: The final roster will be posted and all will have 11 weeks to prepare and train

Do understand that TV, media, sponsors, and unforeseen circumstances may cause slight changes in the process, and I will do all in my power to make these announcements in a timely manner by email or through the website. You need to check the website often to make sure you are keeping up with the updates.

Steve Flaming Wins Automatic Spot for 2012

Steve Flaming, although just missing his PR attempt, defeated all of the other male competitors to automatically qualify for the evening session for 2012. Congrats to Steve and we look forward to him putting up way more than 800 next year in prime time.

Results up for the 2011 NOTLD

Powerlifting Watch did a great job of keeping everyone informed of the results. Special thanks to Chad Salyer, NOTLD scorer, who did such an amazing job.

Over 1,500 Pics of the 2011 NOTLD Are Available Online

Over 1,500 pictures of the 2011 show are up and availble at http://www.xtremepower.tv/NOTLD. There are pictures from both the morning and night session, plus lots of pics from behind the scenes, armwrestling, etc. Enjoy

Jennifer O'Neil Takes Female Division

NOTLD first timer, Jenny O'Neil, won the female division of the NOTLD. She wanted that 500 pound pull, but ended the day with an amazing lift in the high 400's so maybe we will see that 500 next year on the NOTLD stage. What is more amzaing is that she snapped her forearm just a few months ago and was able to get back into such awesome form so quickly. A testament to her didication.

Alison McWeeny Brings Her Isnpiring Story to the NOTLD

Alison McWeeny brought her inspiring story of triumph to the NOTLD stage. After losing a leg in a horrific boating accident 2 years ago, she completed a 171 pound lift on her 4th attempt. MOre importantly, she inspired all that saw her to never give up!

Urbank Breaks All-time American Record at the NOTLD

Vincent Urbank became the greatest 308 deadlifter in the history of America by destroying 906 on his opener at the NOTLD. He then called for 936 on his third to be the greatest deadlifter in American history regardless of bodyweight, but that bid fell just short. He is only 3 pounds off the all-time world record 308 pull and will no doubt eclipse that record soon if he so desires.

Urbank Out Duels Bolton

Vincent Urbank accepted Andy Bolton's challenge to face him at the NOTLD to see who was the biggest puller on the planet. Urbank is America's biggest deadlifter this year and took that responsibility to face Bolton with the weight of the entire nation on his back. He picked the perfect strategy of opening with a new all-time American 308 record of 906 and pushed the sickly Bolton too hard. Doing what many considered impossible, he defeated a man that had not been beaten in a deadlift event in 8 years. If there are no problems with his strongman schedule, Urbank plans to be back to defend his title as the NOTLD"s biggest puller in 2012.

Richard Hawthorne Dominates the NOTLD on Formula

NOTLD first timer, Richard Hawthorne, dominated the field for the best coefficient deadlift by pulling 4.9 times his bodyweight. He is an amazing lifter and only weighed in at 125.6 pounds and ripped up an astounding 611 pounds. He also recieved the first ever NOTLD championship belt presented by Xtreme Power TV. Richard assured us that he is not taking the belt lightly and will be training hard to defend it in 2012 against all comers. You better start training now to have any chance at prying his fingers off of his strap.

Elisa Bird Wins Automatic Bid for 2012

Elizabethton's own Elisa Bird earned her automatic spot in the female division for the NOTLD in 2012 by way of her best female score at the amateur flight of the NOTLD. She is only 15, but we all know she will be training hard to represent her self, and her school, well with the greatest deadlifters in the world next year.

Zach Seymour Wins XPTV UPC Champtionship belt

Boy Wonder, Zach Seymour, won the first ever deadlift belt for Xtreme Power TV's Ultimate Powerlifting Championship at the NOTLD. He competed in 3 of the events throughout the year and just edged out Richard Hawthorne's 2 scores. Congratulations to Zach and we can't wait to see him defend the belt next year.

EXALT GYM BECOMES THE TITLE SPONSOR OF THE 2011 NOTLD

Exalt Gym is the only real gym in the entire Tri-cities area. Forget those cozy little "gyms" with the coffee shops and pink foam weights. This is a real gym for real athletes. They have competition benches, squat racks, chains, bands, monolift, GHR, reverse hyper, battling ropes, sleds, tires, etc. It was the only gym beastly enough to handle the Andy Bolton seminar in 2010. We are proud to have a gym with their vision as the title sponsor of this event. If you live in the area, there is no other place to train. If you ever visit (you know, like to watch the greatest deadlift show on earth) you have to get workout in there.

QUEST NUTRITION IS TITLE SPONSOR OF THE ANDY BOLTON CHALLENGE

Quest Nutrition and Sherman Ledford have stepped up as the title sponsor for the ANDY BOLTON CHALLENGE. I can think of no better a company to do so. Not only have they been invloved with the NOTLD since the second year, they supply the best supplements in the world to the best powerlifters in the world. Lifters like Mike Mastrean, Doc Holloway, Brian Siders, and Wade Hooper can't be wrong. Not only are they a financial supporter, but hey will also be giving away hundreds of dollars in supplements for the participants at the NOTLD.

IF YOU WANT IT, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SHOW UP AND TAKE IT

The lifter that leaves the 2011 NOTLD with the best Wilks formula coefficient combined score from all of the Ultimate Powerlifter CHampionships shows will recive this $1500 Ulimate Powerlifting Championship belt for being the world's ultimate deadlifter. There are only 4 of these in the world: 1 for the best male full meet lifter, 1 for the best female full meet lifter, 1 for the best bencher, and of course this one for the ULTIMATE DEADLIFTER which will be awarded at the NOTLD.

The winner will get this belt strapped around their waist in 60 million homes on Fox Sports Net on Extreme Power TV plus all of the pride of being considered the greatest deadlifter in the world. The winner is expected to return to the UPC series on Xtreme Power TV and defend that title in 2012 when XPTV plan to again award it at the belt at the culmination of the series at the NOTLD.

POWERLIFTERS GET ATHLETE TESTED

Several NOTLD related powerlifters represented the sport when we became the first powerlifters tested at the ETSU athlete performance lab. We performed quite well. I am now preparing an article on the results. The short run down is that we had higher vertical jumps, body fat % about 5-6 points below other power athletes, and were the third fastest at developing force of all athlete groups. Not too bad for some "fat, out of shape muscle heads".

Until the article is published enjoy the 41 pctures at the ETSU website.

APT's NOTLD 2010 MAKES THE COVER OF POWERLIFTING USA

After months of hard work by all involved, the NOTLD will get the credit it deserves as the premier deadlifting event in America with is cover spot on the December 2010 issue of Powerlifting USA.

Thanks to all the great lifters that came and put on the performance of a life time, the sponsors that got on board and supported these lifters and made this epic showdown a reality, the fans that showed up by the hundreds, and all of the workers that made it go off without a hitch.
